THE PATERSON LIFEPLAN PROCESS

– AN OVERVIEW

At Paterson, our heart and vision are to see movements of people filled with hope, bringing about transformational change to the world’s biggest challenges. At the core of these movements of hope and impact are individuals who have gained clarity about who they are and the contribution they are here to make. The Paterson LifePlan Process is a facilitated journey that guides individuals to discover their unique identity and purpose. This clarity leads to breakthroughs and provides a roadmap for making their greatest contribution in life.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of guiding thousands of people through the LifePlan Process. One thing we’ve observed time and again is that great beauty can arise from great brokenness. In so many cases, the hardest parts of someone’s story often provide fertile ground for seasons of profound discovery and growth. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that the founding story of the LifePlan Process is also one of struggle, heartbreak, and deep intention.

Over many years, Tom Paterson deeply impacted the companies and individuals that he collaborated with throughout his career. In the course of doing so, two series of events led to the creation of the LifePlan Process.

First, Tom and his wife Ginny experienced great tragedy, when his daughter Debbie died at the age of 12 from spinal cancer. This tragedy sent Tom into a descent of deep grief, and he turned to alcohol for relief. As the proverb goes, “Man takes a drink; drink takes a drink; and drink takes the man.” His heart broken, Tom had lost hope. Finally, in the pit of his desperation, he turned to God and surrendered His life to Jesus. At the end of himself, Tom began to find hope and purpose again. His intention turned to the human story and towards tapping into human potential.

AS GUIDES, WE LEAD BY EXPERIENCE

As guides, we can only lead someone on a journey that we ourselves have navigated – and are still navigating!

The diagram below provides a high-level overview of the LifePlan Process. During the two-day LifePlan, you will cover Perspective and Planning. Management and Renewal are introduced at the end of Day 2 and are explored further in subsequent sessions.

Through the years, we’ve had the privilege of guiding thousands of people through the LifePlan Process.

It is not a plan that is conceived and developed, but rather one that is discovered through a series of guided processes, tools, and conversations.

The more Tom understood how God had shaped him, the more he became aware of God’s individualized plan for his life. Tom discovered more than 1,000 references in the Bible that refer to the fact that God has a plan for each of us in our lives. Tom’s process-oriented mind went to the next step: If God has a unique plan for each of us, why is it that so many do not know what their plan is. If we don’t know what it is, what hope do we have to live it?

A LifePlan, then, is essentially a strategic operating plan for an individual. It is God’s plan for a life — discovered, owned, and lived out by the individual. It is not a plan that is conceived and developed, but rather a plan that is discovered through a series of guided processes, tools, and conversations.

When you arrive at the end of more than a day of perspective gathering, both the client and the Guide will begin to see connections, rising trends, and unmistakable clarity as truth begins to fill the room. A personal life pathway is unfolding — with clarity into one’s life purpose, life calling, and life vision.

Perspective Before Planning – The Paterson Spiral

The strategy for a two-day plan begins with perspective. During Tom’s work in China, he observed that the eastern approach to problem-solving often produces more thoughtful solutions. Their circuitous thinking produces a multi-dimensional answer. The LifePlan process uses their method.

LifePlan Fundamental
Principles

The LifePlan process is a proven process, built soundly on a sturdy foundation of philosophical principles. Philosophy drives the process, and the process drives results. If you misunderstand, ignore or violate the underlying principles, the integrity of the process is jeopardized. The way in which we teach you the tools is the way in which the process should be facilitated.

TYPICAL WESTERN APPROACH

The typical western approach is a direct frontal assault, sometimes a shot from the hip motivated by a desire for a speedy “solution,” tending to produce one-dimensional answers to multi-dimensional problems.

THE PATERSON LIFEPLAN PROCESS, AN EASTERN APPROACH

The eastern approach is more circuitous, yet ever-closing in. A balanced perspective is pursued through thorough situation analysis and diagnostics. The goal is to achieve more thoughtful, systemic solutions, multi-dimensional answers to multi-dimensional problems, and less work later through a holistic perspective.

ASCENDING PERSPECTIVE

Let us take a look at the process by laying the diagram on its side. You will see that the individual is ascending in his or her perspective by providing a 360-degree view of their life. At the peak of this ascent, we see above the valley floors of life, experience, and breakthroughs; the core plan can now emerge from the fog.

Trust the Process

Tom would say it again and again, “It’s not my process; it’s God’s process.” Tom saw the Paterson Process as a gift to be stewarded and cultivated. That doesn’t mean we use it blindly — not at all. But it does mean we hold it and use it with deep respect. We Trust the Process, because it has shown itself to be trustworthy. We know that until we’ve mastered something, we haven’t earned the right to change it — especially something that’s been around for 40+ years, and helped thousands of people. And so we encourage you — as we do too — to Trust the Process and to use the tools in the way they are taught. As we learn a trusted process like LifePlan, we encourage you to notice those times when your desire is to change a part of the process — we’d suggest those moments are great invitations to instead go deeper into understanding that part of the process, so we don’t miss the beauty within.

These phases flow one to the other, at times overlapping, and always winding their way forward.

Here’s a brief description of each phase.

THE AWAKENING AND AWARENESS PHASE is when we become fully conscious of our need to know why we exist and what we’re called to become and do. When we are asleep, we are content with our day-to-day existence and have no concern for making a difference through our life contributions and relationships. When we awaken, we feel an increasing need to answer the questions, “Why am I alive? What am I to become? What am I to do with my life?” Over time, these questions grow in force, eventually consuming our thoughts and prodding us to find answers.

THE ADAPTING AND RENEWING PHASE is the art of responding to constant change while staying true to our life calling. As we encounter new opportunities, tests, losses, surprises, and seasons of life, a mindset and practice to reorient and realign ourselves keeps us relevant. Here we learn how to assess new opportunities and filter them through what we know to be true in order to identify those worth pursuing. Here we learn how to push the pause button on life in order to embrace those life events that require our presence and full engagement. And here we learn to quickly return to healthy life rhythms after our context has changed. In this phase we learn the practice of engaging in strategic pauses in order to rediscover, realign and deepen our understanding and commitment to live our life’s calling. Here we revisit, reclaim, and advance what we know to be true about who we are and what we were created to do. The practice of renewal presses life’s truths into deeper layers of our life with new, relevant applications and adventures. Ongoing renewal wards off boredom and advances the life we were created to enjoy.

The Journey to Live Life’s Purpose

The “Journey To Live Life’s Purpose” diagram below illustrates the big-picture overview with general phases or stages that we go through in our desire and pursuit to live out our calling. The process begins when you are awakened and made aware of your need for insight, clarity, and answers—kicking you into search and discovery mode. Yet truth merely discovered and not owned will not be lived; surrender is the portal to ownership. Furthermore, we count on every new discovery to be tested, sifting out the clutter and revealing your focused sweet spot. Constant adaptation and renewal keep us relevant and real and often lead to new phases of awakening and awareness within ourselves.
